The Naruto series’ Sage Mode is one of the most powerful abilities audiences have witnessed in anime. With this special mode, ninjas utilize natural energy to further enhance their attacks. It is an incredibly strong ability and is only taught at two places: Mount Myoboku and the Ryuchi Cave. As such, only a few characters in Naruto have managed to learn Sage Mode.
There are a few pre-requisites for gaining access to the Sage Mode. Firstly, the learner must have high chakra reserves, and secondly, their body must be strong enough to withstand the increase in power. Many characters such as Orochimaru have tried, but have been unable to use it. The following characters, though, have demonstrated the use of the technique.
12 Jiraiya
- Affiliation: Hidden Leaf
One of the members of the Legendary Sannin, Jiraiya was the teacher of many great ninjas, including Naruto, Minato, Nagato, and, Konan. When he reverse-summoned to Mount Myoboku, Fukasaku took Jiraiya under his wing and taught him the Sage Mode.
However, Jiraiya was unable to master the Sage Mode in Naruto and ended up with an imperfect transformation. This took a lot of time to use and was not the strongest that it could be.
BiggestAccomplishment: As a very famous ninja, Jiraiya was involved in countless missions throughout his life, however, his greatest feat was definitely defeating three bodies of Pain and sending one of them to the Hidden Leaf. His sacrifice effectively saved the entire village.
11 Shima
- Affiliation: Mount Myoboku
An elder toad from Mount Myoboku, Shima is a fairly powerful character in the world of Naruto. Like her husband, Shima is also able to use the Sage Mode without any difficulty.
Along with Fukasaku, Shima played an important role in the fight against Six Paths of Pain. The two of them managed to trap three bodies of Pain with their genjutsu, further demonstrating their strength and their mastery of Sage Mode.
Biggest Accomplishment: Shima aided Jiraiya in his fight to defeat Pain. Her genjutsu skills proved to be invaluable as they helped Jiraiya to capture one of Pain’s bodies.
10 Gamakichi
Gamakichi is the personal summon of Naruto Uzumaki, a toad from Mount Myõboku. He is a strong summon, as demonstrated by his ability to use the Sage Mode.
It is unknown when Gamakichi acquired the ability to use the Sage Mode, but he has been seen using it on several occasions. With Gamakichi in his corner, Naruto is only more powerful.
Biggest Accomplishment: Gamakichi’s efforts during the Fourth Great Ninja War helped the Allied Shinobi Forces to find Obito’s weakness to Senjutsu enhanced attacks and ultimately resulted in the Uchiha’s defeat.
9 Jugo
- Affiliation: Hidden Sound
Jugo used to be a test subject of Orochimaru, who willingly entrusted Orochimaru with his body as he wanted to get rid of his rage. Orochimaru conducted several experiments on Jugo to find more about his abilities.
All the members of Jugo’s clan shared the same Kekkei Genkai, which allowed them to absorb natural energy without putting in any effort. Kabuto and Mitsuki are able to use Sage Mode as their bodies contain cells taken from Jugo.
Biggest Accomplishment: Being able to gain better control over his rage issues is undoubtedly Jugo’s biggest accomplishment.
8 Kabuto Yakushi
Kabuto drew heavy inspiration from Orochimaru, one of the Legendary Sannin. He went as far as injecting his body with the cells of his master. After gaining a few Kekkei Genkai, Kabuto began to train at the Ryuchi Cave and attained the Sage Mode.
With the help of Jugo’s Kekkei Genkai, Kabuto was able to maintain the transformation for as long he wanted. His Sage Mode allowed him to take on Itachi and Sasuke at the same time.
Biggest Accomplishment: After learning the Sage Mode, Kabuto became a changed man. With his knowledge, he improved the Impure World Reincarnation, which helped Obito to start the Fourth Great Ninja War.
7 Minato Namikaze
Known as the Yellow Flash of the Hidden Leaf, Minato Namikaze was the fastest ninja of his time and played a major in the Hidden Leaf’s success during the Third Great Ninja War. Many ninjas, including Kakashi and Hiruzen, considered Minato the strongest Hokage of all time.
After he was reanimated by Orochimaru, it was revealed that Minato was also able to use the perfect Sage Mode. However, he voluntarily avoided using it as he tended to end his fights in a very short time when he did so.
Biggest Accomplishment: Minato became the Hokage at a very young age. He had numerous feats to his name, but his biggest feat was saving the Hidden Leaf from the attack of the Nine-Tails and Obito.
6 White Snake Sage
- Affiliation: Ryuchi Cave
The White Snake Sage is the leader of the snakes that reside within the Ryuchi Cave. The Sage teaches others how to use the Sage Mode after they have undergone several trials, and thus obviously can use it skillfully herself.
The White Snake Sage injects aspiring trainees with natural energy via her fangs. Not much is known about her true power, but it is best to assume that she should not be underestimated, given what her students have accomplished.
Biggest Accomplishment: The White Snake Sage has not been involved in any major fight, but with her knowledge, she has helped ninjas like Kabuto and Mitsuki to gain a great deal of power.
5 Mitsuki
Mitsuki is the child of Orochimaru and one of the main characters in Boruto, whose potential has been frequently acknowledged by Orochimaru and his teachers. Despite his age, Mitsuki is a calm and collected individual, who calculates his every move.
Mitsuki is able to use the Sage Transformation without any drawbacks. The power of the Sage Transformation gives him a major power boost and allows him to enhance his jutsu even further.
Biggest Accomplishment: Mitsuki is an extremely talented ninja, and under proper guidance, he could easily become one of the strongest ninjas in the series. He showed his skill when he managed to defeat Shino Aburame.
4 Kashin Koji
- Affiliation: Kara
Kashin Koji is a clone that Amado created from Jiraiya’s DNA. The sole purpose of Kashin Kojj was to take down Jigen and Isshiki Otsutsuki. Kashij Koji is shown to be a strong character, as he was able to defeat Konohamaru with relative ease.
Unlike Jiraiya, Kashin Koji had perfected the Sage Mode, which enabled him to activate the power instantly. Kashin Koji’s Sage Mode allowed him to stand his ground against Jigen and forced Isshiki to revive himself and use his powers.
Biggest Accomplishment: Kashin Koni reminded the fans of Jiraiya, and his skill is comparable to the member of the Legendary Sannin. His biggest feat is forcing Isshiki to come out and show his true colors.
3 Fukasaku
Fukasaku is one of the toads from Mount Myoboku and the teacher of Jiraiya. When Jiraiya reverse-summoned himself to Mount Myoboku, Fukasaku taught him how to use the Sage Mode.
Fukasaku is quite skilled in genjutsu as he was able to use Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant, which allowed Jiraiya to defeat and capture one of the bodies of the Six Paths of Pain. He is apt at using senjutsu, which made him stronger than many characters in the series.
Biggest Accomplishment: Like his wife, Fukasaku aided Jiraiya in his fight against the Six Paths of Pain. When he knew that Jiraiya was dying, Fukasaku gladly accepted his request to write the secret about Pain on his back.
2 Hashirama Senju
After forming the Hidden Leaf Village, Hashirama Senju became its First Hokage. Being a member of the Senju clan, Hashirama had very high chakra reserves, and they were further boosted by his then-unnamed Sage Mode.
Hashirama’s Sage Mode allowed him to increase the power of his Wood Release. With this ability, he had enough power to fight the combined duo of Madara Uchiha and the Nine-Tails.
Biggest Accomplishment: For a ninja with the status of Hashirama Senju, it is difficult to pinpoint one achievement. However, his biggest accomplishment is definitely defeating Madara during their final battle at the Valley of End.
1 Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto is the Seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf. His heroics in the Fourth Great Ninja War cemented his status as the “Savior of the World.” Naruto is able to use two types of Sage Mode: Toad Sage Mode and Six Paths Sage Mode.
With the power of these two types of Sage Mode, Naruto was able to beat many strong enemies, including Madara Uchiha, Obito Uchiha, and Kaguya Otsutsuki. Towards the end of the series, Naruto could comfortably fight and defeat the Five Kage on his own with this power.
Biggest Accomplishment: Currently, Naruto is the strongest ninja in the world. His power is only matched by Sasuke Uchiha. Naruto’s biggest feat is defeating his rival and best friend, Sasuke Uchiha, and bringing him back to the village.
