Netflix now offers the cult classic cartoon Bee and PuppyCat after several years, numerous delays, and some accidental leaks. Along with the eagerly anticipated Season 2.
However, in typical Bee and PuppyCat form, this Netflix release is more than just a drop of fresh episodes. One must comprehend Bee and PuppyCat’s journey to Netflix in order to completely understand what is currently available.
Bee and PuppyCat: History
Natasha Allegri, a former character designer for Adventure Time, created Bee and PuppyCat as a brief online series that debuted with a single two-part episode on Frederator Digital’s YouTube channel Cartoon Hangover. It gained so much popularity that Frederator started a Kickstarter campaign to make a complete web series. It was the most profitable animation Kickstarter in history at the moment.
The show focuses on the activities of Bee, a happy twenty-something who is perpetually jobless and discovers a bizarre puppy-cat hybrid that communicates by making eerie chiming noises. Bee joins PuppyCat on temporary space employment as Bee meets PuppyCat’s acquaintances in her hometown. The episodes strike a balance between thrilling interplanetary adventures and commonplace yet difficult Earth issues. The program stands out as an adult animated program with grown-up characters that don’t rely on crude comedy or mature material but is still approachable to younger audiences while presenting the characters with new problems.
The first 4 episodes of Bee and PuppyCat debuted in 2014 on YouTube, with the following six episodes initially planned to do the same. But two years later, they found themselves on the digital aggregation portal VRV. Many fans were unaware that new episodes were being produced. They eventually returned to YouTube in 2018, where they are still evident today.
Bee and PuppyCat: Lazy in Space, season 2 of the show, was however delayed while Frederator searched for a new streaming platform after it was first announced in 2017 with a 2019 release date in sight. After the studio mistakenly leaked the entire season on Frederator founder Fred Seibert’s Vimeo channel in early 2020, the first episode was eventually released at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Naturally, they were destroyed shortly. The official announcement that Lazy in Space would be available on Netflix in 2022 came from Frederator in October 2020.
