Original story (published on July 1, 2022) follows:

Oculus was born as a company focused on VR experiences. They seek to offer complete ecosystem products that allow you to enjoy both games and multimedia content.

The company announced the Oculus Quest series as new VR devices at a more affordable price. To date, Meta has released two generations in the Quest series (Oculus Quest 1 and 2).

That said, currently Oculus Quest users are facing issues after a recent update.

More specifically, Oculus Quest ‘Air Link’ feature performance is stuttering and laggy after the latest v41 update. But there are some workarounds for that.

Oculus Air Link is a feature that allows users to play PC VR games wirelessly (via streaming) on their Quest devices.

But it seems that the recent Oculus Quest v41 update ‘broke’ this feature, causing stuttering performance every few seconds. This makes many games currently unplayable on the VR headset.

I’ve been having a problem with air link, It used to work flawlessly but now every 10 seconds or so I’ll get a stutter and it’s just insanely annoying. I’ve tried a lot of fixes but nothing seems to work. It’s not an internet problem, so I just don’t know what to do. Source

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to work out some issues I’m having with AirLink and after many hours I cannot seem to achieve a smooth high quality session. My main issue is an occasional stutter that will persist for several seconds in my vision and controller movement. It is ignorable since it only lasts 1-2 seconds and occurs mostly spontaneously. I have tried VD but dislike it’s colors and have a similar stuttering issue. Source

Official acknowledgment and explanation of the issue

Fortunately, the Oculus team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. They also offer an official workaround, which consists of changing your Air Link dynamic bitrate.

Furthermore, an Oculus Software Engineer reveals that the problem is caused by a functional conflict between the Oculus device v41 update and the Oculus PC software v40 update.

The Oculus Software Engineer also specifies that stuttering performance can occur every 60 seconds, and recommends users to opt into the Public Test Channel (PTC) in the Oculus PC app to receive a fix sooner.

Other potential workarounds

There are other potential workarounds you can try, such as running a ‘repair installation of the oculus software’:

Alternatively, a Redditor suggests that rebooting the Oculus Quest devices at least 2 times after an update helps avoid performance issues.

Probably an automatic update in the background or something. Source

To top it off, another Redditor suggests using the ‘Oculus Killer’ tool to keep the conflicting software isolated. The tool is available on GitHub.

We will update this story once new related developments emerge.
