Oculus Quest is the most affordable lineup of VR (Virtual Reality) headsets on Meta’s catalog. Oculus Quest 2 is the most recent version in the series.
The Oculus Quest headsets stand out for being all-in-one devices. Unlike its more expensive brothers that require a PC, the Oculus Quest integrates all the necessary hardware (chipset, screen, audio, etc.).
Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 users can download games and apps from the company’s own store. In addition, an app purchased for one device can be shared with others through the ‘App Sharing’ feature.
However, currently many users are facing issues with the feature. Apparently Oculus Quest App Sharing is broken or not working (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) after an update.
Oculus Quest App Sharing broken or not working
According to multiple reports, the Oculus Quest App Sharing feature has not been working properly for a while now.
When affected Oculus Quest users try using the option, they only get a ‘Multiple devices can’t access this app at the same time’ or ‘Already playing this game on a different headset’ error message.
So I’ve been wanting to play vr with my siblings, since I have my own quest now. I gave them a new account on the quest one and turned on app sharing hoping so we could play the same game together on different accounts, but when I play with them it says on my quest two “multiples devices can’t access this app at the same time. “ Source
So my wife and I have been playing a lot of walkabout mini golf. I have the quest and she uses the quest 2. Have set up as primary on both headsets and she has her own account on the quest 2. Also have app sharing turned on, on the quest 2 so we can play the same games together. Then, after this recent update, every game we go into, I get kicked out saying that my account is already playing this game on a different headset. Source
The glitch came with the Oculus Quest v38 update
Apparently, the Oculus Quest v38 update is responsible for the malfunction of the App Sharing feature.
However, there have been reports of issues related to Oculus Quest App Sharing for at least two months.
Since v38, app sharing is glitched on various games, especially new ones downloaded, where the primary user will receive a notification that app sharing is not allowed with multiple devices. Shared user does not receive notification. Source
Issue acknowledged, potential workaround
The Oculus team is already aware of the issue in question. In a recent official acknowledgment, the company confirms that they have identified the origin of the glitch and are working on a fix for a future update.
In the meantime, there is a potential workaround that reportedly helps resolve the issue:

– turn off app sharing in the main profile – remove all added user/users. – restart the headset – turn app sharing back on -re add any profiles
So far no more pop ups about requiring additional purchases to continue, but it’s a pain that I had to re set up everything all over again in the additional profile. Source
